FORD GT40 COMPETES AT GOODWOOD REVIVAL MEETINGline

The ex-Yamaha Ford GT40 (P/1077) successfully competed at this year’s Goodwood Revival Meeting during the weekend of 14/16 September.

The car was entered in the newly created Whitsun Trophy race for sports-racing cars of a type that raced between 1963 and 1968.

This very original example was initially used by Yamaha for test and development purposes and is a sister car to the Gulf-specification cars. It retains its original factory paint colours of Ford buttercup yellow with a white body stripe with black edging; and a Ford GT40 289cu V8 engine complete with Gurney Weslake cylinder heads. The car had only raced twice before the Goodwood event, this being at the Suzuka circuit in Japan in 1970. Classic Cars magazine featured GT40 P/1077 in its October 2000 issue when it was driven by 1969 Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver.

The race itself started in dry conditions, but a heavy rain shower caused the race to be stopped following an accident involving another competitor at the chicane.
