EX-YAMAHA GT40 FINISHES STRONGLY IN WHITSUN TROPHY RACE AT GOODWOOD REVIVAL
![]()
The ex-Yamaha Ford
GT40 (chassis 1077) finished strongly in 7th place overall in the
Whitsun Trophy Race at this year’s Goodwood Revival Meeting on Sunday 7
September.
Following
its participation in the special GT40 display at this year’s Pebble Beach
Concours to commemorate the Ford Motor Company’s centenary, 1077 returned by
air to the UK, where it was tested at Goodwood prior to the Revival Meeting
weekend.
1077
competed against six GT40s and other sports prototypes in the very competitive
Whitsun Trophy race at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit.

A total of 28 entries made for some very fast lap times and the winner of the race Frank Sytner in a Lola-Chevrolet T70 Spyder, set a new lap record of 1:22.756.
During
the second lap of the race, whilst the tightly bunched field were threading
their way through the narrow chicane, two of the front-running cars touched and
created a multiple car incident. During the ensuing confusion, the left rear of
1077 sustained minor bodywork damage when it was struck by the Corvette Grand
Sport driven by Richard Attwood. However, quick-thinking and efficient repairs
carried out on the grid by the Lynx mechanics prior to the re-start, ensured
that 1077 took its original qualifying position of 10th on the
re-formed grid.
Running
in very original specification, 1077 ran faultlessly throughout the race and
finished in 7th place overall, recording a fastest lap of 1:25.921.

“The
Goodwood Revival weekend is always very special and I thoroughly enjoyed
competing in the GT40 with so many motor racing legends”, enthused John
Mayston-Taylor after the race.
